The Situation

The Port of Long Beach (POLB) is a pivotal player in global trade, serving as the second busiest container port in the U.S. and ranking as the 21st busiest port worldwide. POLB believes it is more important than ever to have full visibility and transparency for shipments. They require a tool that supports their partners in scheduling and planning prior to cargo arrival and reducing delays during each hand-off between modes of transportation.

Approach

A proof of concept (POC) was developed at a port terminal to test a cloud-based data tool for real-time freight visibility. The solution required secure, flexible data ingestion from diverse sources, robust business rules, and controlled self-serve data access for authenticated users beyond port personnel.

Results

Real-Time Visibility

The Supply Chain Information Highway (SCIH) POC demonstrates the value that can be achieved utilizing this data visibility tool. By enabling real-time visibility, users can make more informed and faster operational decisions and will be empowered to optimize their supply chains and staff.

Supply Chain Optimization

The proof of concept can be expanded and operationalized to other terminals and ports to become the solution for supply chain issues.

Expansion Potential

The SCIH is built in a secure, highly available and well proven cloud environment for authorized supply chain partners to access data to improve cargo visibility o optimize container movement and gain efficiencies.

Secure and Efficient Data Access

Data extraction is available via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and is only available to authorized users.
